SCI CONNECT – January

Eurocode steel designers will be well aware of Mcr, - it must be calculated en route to the lateral torsional buckling resistance. Formulas exist for simple situations, but for more complex arrangements, software is the way forward. SCI has just completed a significant upgrade of the assessment tool on steelconstruction.info which has now been released. The new version allows full flexibility to define supports, restraints and loading to reflect complex arrangements. Intermediate supports and restraints may be defined at any position along the member, at a user-defined position from the shear centre. Point loads, distributed loads and moments may also be applied at any position, as illustrated below. This gives the user the means to assess a member with a non-standard loading arrangement, perhaps with intermittent restraints to (for example) one flange only. To assess this type of complex arrangement, software is the only realistic option. Members may be UB or UC, or defined by dimensions or by properties, so fabricated sections may be modelled. Defining members by dimensions allows the user to assess tapered members which vary in height over the length of the segment. Comprehensive output is reported, which may be printed or exported to other applications. This new tool is freely available at www.steelconstruction.info.

SCI’s principal engineer Anqi Chen, has been awarded the ROB LACEY AWARD for his paper submitted to the SIMULIA UK 2016 Regional User Conference. Anqi’s paper was entitled “Advanced numerical analysis of instrument boxes and ISO container subjected to blast loading from vapour cloud detonations”.

The Rob Lacey Award was named after Rob Lacey who in his mid-thirties and whilst working for SIMULIA UK lost his battle with illness. His colleagues set up this award following his death for his contribution to the company and ABAQUS community. Anqi and SCI are honoured to have received this award.

New Technical Digest 2016

At the NSC (New Steel Construction Journal) editorial board meeting held in November 2016, it was suggested that for the SCI technical articles that appear monthly in the NSC journal it would be useful to keep all these article together as a separate ‘go to’ resource.

Following on from the feedback we are pleased to announce that a Technical Digest containing all the 2016 technical articles have now been produced as a PDF document and the digest is available to download at; NSC Technical Digest.

New delivery software for Webinars

Over the last few years our technical webinars for Corporate and Sole Trader members have been delivered using ‘Live Meeting’. This software has now become unsupported, and we have seen an increasing number of our members experience problems in viewing.

Following investigation into various packages we have chosen WebEx as the new software to deliver our Webinars from March 2017. The software is free to download, however unlike “live Meeting” there is a viewing restriction limited to the first 100 registrations per session. To accommodate this and to avoid our members missing out, we will be running an additional webinar per month giving everyone the opportunity to view. If you register on behalf of a group then this is classed as one registration and the process will remain unchanged. Jane Burrell will be sending further details to viewers in February so that everyone is prepared to view the March webinar.

To see our forthcoming Member Technical Webinars visit the SCI website.

Events/courses and webinars

Our guest webinar on 17th January was a presentation made by ForestBrown. The presentation was entitled: “Is your innovation worth more than you realise”.

The speakers delivered information on how to ascertain if your company is eligible to claim tax credits for product innovation. For members who were unable to attend the webinar we are able to provide a copy of the presentation. Please contact Jane Burrell for a copy.

In-house training
As well as delivering monthly technical webinars to our members, and providing public courses throughout the UK, SCI are able to provide training to companies at their chosen location. Content for these courses can be provided to complement specific project needs or overall company training requirements, including graduate training schemes.

Contact Jane Burrell to discuss any training requirements.
