Recent Heyne Tillett Steel projects include a new sports hall and sixth form centre for Channing Secondary School for Girls located off Highgate Hill in the London Borough of Haringey.
HTS proposed a double pitched steel roof structure with no internal support using four sloped steel trusses spanning 34m along the length of the building.
With only a 30 degree pitch large horizontal forces from the roof trying to spread were resisted by a series of exposed Macalloy ties between perimeter columns and the central valley chords of the trusses.
Working closely with the steelwork fabricator, the central valley chords were preset to limit their vertical deflection. Rafters and bracing members were fabricated short of their finished geometry to allow the roof to fall into the desired position under the structures self weight and super imposed dead loads.
The extended project comprises construction of a new performing arts building, sixth form centre and sports hall to enhance Channing’s existing sports, education and arts facilities. The new buildings are sensitive architecturally owing to the position of the school within a historical part of Highgate and the school’s heritage.
The works have been phased to cause the minimum possible disruption to the operation of the school with the sports hall and sixth form centre completed in March 2015 and the performing arts building due to commence construction in the summer.
