Lindapter clamping systems were specified for Shell’s gas plant in Bacton, Norfolk.

The site required multiple improvements and upgrades in order to prolong the life of the facility to gain three more decades of production. The first phase of the project involved the crucial replacement of a dilapidated roof on the main administration building.

At the bidding stage, the Main Contractor, Munnings Construction Limited, set about designing out all hot works from the project. Through their regional supplier, Hubble & Co Limited,  Lindapter’s technical engineers were contacted for advice. Lindapter’s free connection design service provided drawings so that the proposed connection details could be included in the bid. Munnings Construction quickly received 2D and 3D drawings of the truss to rafter assemblies, which clearly showed the Lindapter clamping systems and how the on-site hot works was omitted. The tender review committee were impressed when they saw the detailed bid which eliminated the need for welding, especially because it had originally been specified by the Engineers as ‘welded on-site’.

Lindapter’s proposed connection arrangement consisted of Lindapter’s high strength Type AF and Type CF clamps for securing the rolled steel angles to the existing steel roof trusses. The Type CF clamps hooked onto the existing angles (chord members) to attach angle cleats to the frame. This  provided a fast and easy installation of the timber purlins, which were simply laid across the supporting steelwork and fastened to the angle cleats.

Munnings Construction benefitted from a quick installation using just standard hand tools, which eliminated on-site hot works and impressed their client. After successfully completing phase 1 and demonstrating careful planning and safe installation, Munnings Construction has been awarded Phase Two of the development works.

Phil Munnings, Director at Munnings Construction Ltd commented “Lindapter have been a fundamental part in this phased contract win with Shell to provide roof works at a major gas processing facility. Our tender proposal included steelwork connection designs prepared by Lindapter’s Engineers and offered a safer construction programme due to removing on-site welding.”

Since 1934, Lindapter has pioneered the design and manufacture of steelwork fixings and delivered the highest quality at every stage of the service, from initial connection design to installation guidance.
