The future of UK steel construction

1483

Recent years have seen fundamental changes to the support for the steel construction market in the UK. We have moved away from the original triumvirate of British Steel, BCSA and SCI, a grouping that was so successful in increasing steel’s market share from the mid-1980s onwards.

The first big change came some years ago when Tata Steel and BCSA formally joined forces to fund activities, as before using SCI as their key supplier of technical expertise.

Then earlier in 2016 BCSA formed Steel for Life, with the stated purpose to communicate and disseminate the advantages of steel in construction to architects, engineers, contractors and the wider supply chain. Steel for Life is funded by numerous organisations across the steel construction supply chain.

A major broadening of the funding base for market support reflects how SCI has evolved over the past decade. Having moved completely away from our initial almost total reliance on British Steel funding, it means that even should (given recent worrying news about its ownership) Tata Steel no longer be in a position to support SCI we can continue to service a buoyant steel construction sector.

A healthy order book for 2016/17 shows just how well SCI has delivered the vision of its founders to be an independent organisation serving the steel construction sector.
