SCI CONNECT – February 2020

SCI are proud to be helping the University of Sheffield present Eurosteel 2020 - The Ninth European Conference on Steel and Composite Structures - this September.

Eurosteel has consistently attracted more than 500 delegates from countries across the world, and is now an essential event for researchers at all levels, as well as designers and fabricators. It provides a great opportunity for industry and academia to meet and discuss real-world problems where research is needed, as well as the opportunities provided by leading-edge research.

In Sheffield the organisers hope to increase the number of sessions in which both academia and industry can learn from one another. This is of particular interest to SCI. Hence there is an aim to present papers from practitioners in design, fabrication and construction, alongside those from researchers. Invited keynote lectures will cover major themes in current research, as well as the real-world context of current steel construction.

Eurosteel 2020

Young researchers will particularly benefit from attending. The conference will allow them to present their research findings and discuss them with leading experts in their fields, to appreciate the state of the art in other areas of research and practice, and to generate ideas by interacting with practitioners.

The conference themes cover all aspects of steel construction, including composite construction, cold-formed structures, codification, offshore structures, education, and high-performance steels (to name but a few).

The event will be hosted in the University of Sheffield's state-of-the-art Diamond Building, which is home to over 5000 students from seven departments within the Faculty of Engineering.

SCI's research project STROBE (Stronger Steels in the Built Environment) needs your help.

We are carrying out a Europe-wide survey to develop a clear understanding of what is current practice in terms of deflection checks. Your contribution will be much appreciated and will provide us with relevant information for this project. We would be grateful if you take 5 mins or less to answer our 5 questions.

Caunton Engineering continue their Constructionarium adventures with a second Gherkin

Constructionarium Ltd is a not-for-profit organisation providing an innovative and 'hands-on' construction experience for students and professionals in the built environment sector. Since 2003 over 12,000 delegates have attended Constructionarium to work in teams over six days to build one of their carefully designed projects. Each project is a scaled down replica of an iconic structure from around the world which mirrors the challenges of life on site and enables students to apply the knowledge they have gained in a practical, safe and relevant environment.

One of these various scaled - down iconic structures is London's renowned Gherkin, and Caunton Engineering were invited to supply the steelwork framing this model. Caunton originally fabricated the steelwork for the Constructionarium "Mini-Gherkin" in 2007, based on a structural design by Expedition Engineering. This iconic structure of London's skyline is replicated in a three storey, 12 metre tall version using prefabricated steel elements which tie into a precast floor. This is located at the Constructionarium Bircham Newton, Norfolk site. Read more

Light Gauge Steel Profiles - Problem-solving at its best with The Depot

Part of the international Hadley Group, Hadley Steel Framing's light gauge steel profiles have been installed in a nine-storey student accommodation in Exeter, called The Depot. The £40m development will provide accommodation for circa 600 students.

As part of the broader build, the student accommodation has been designed to include a large retail and shopping area on its ground level. The space comes complete with a number of restaurants and bars, which add to the area's dynamic appeal. Hadley Steel Framing provided a complete system from conceptual design through to installation using its pre-panelised, off-site bolted frame in conjunction with its composite concrete decking floor system.

Working with student accommodation can be difficult, requiring intense planning to ensure that timelines are upheld. The build at The Depot broke ground in July 2017 with the installation of the Hadley Steel Framing system starting on site in April 2018. Work was completed on the site in February 2019, with students scheduled to move into the accommodation from September 2019. Read more

SCI Advisory Questions and Answers

SCI offers support, for Sole Traders and Corporate Members, through our Advisory Desk Service. Questions and Answers which we feel are pertinent to the wider Member audience are published anonymously to the SCI Information Portal. In some cases we make the entire question and Answer available.

In some cases we make the entire question and Answer available where the question in this case relates to our 'Blue Book'

This month our published question is about; Bolt Bearing resistances in the Blue Book P363

Question: Why are two tables of bearing resistance given for Non Preloaded Grade 8.8 and 10.9 hexagon head bolts?

Answer:The values are given for edge distances used in typical connections and again for edge distances which give a larger resistance. See Note 11 referenced in the footnote to the table in the hard or pdf copy of the Book (or under the separate index item "Explanatory Notes" beneath "Bolts and Welds" in the interactive Blue Book).

Members can see the answer to all Advisory questions on the SCI Information Portal.
