As we draw to the end of a year that has proven to be unexpectedly turbulent on a global scale, it is timely to reflect on where we are as an organisation. The uncertainty caused by ‘Brexit’ has not gone unnoticed at SCI, as a significant proportion of our work is based on part-funded RFCS (Research Fund for Coal and Steel) projects. Over many years we have used this funding scheme as a way to build knowledge, maintain critical mass, and network with experts across Europe. Whilst we have heard muted assurances that financial support of ‘current’ projects will continue beyond ‘Brexit’, the future remains very uncertain. In the meantime on our RFCS project work is buoyant, as are our Innovate UK projects, which include a recently completed project looking at re-use rather than recycling of steel. Dissemination of this project took place at the end of November and presentations are available on the project web page. In September we proudly launched the ‘Orange Book’ for ArcelorMittal at a Joint ArcelorMittal-SCI Event at the ArcelorMittal Orbit. This is the most advanced format of on-line design data ever produced by SCI, reflecting user-feedback and the latest technologies. This electronic-only ‘book’ provides information on a wide range of sections produced from steels including S355/HISTAR355 and S460/HISTAR460. As well as our project work for clients we were delighted to have welcomed 43 new companies into SCI membership in 2016, from a wide spectrum of the industry. SCI membership offers support to companies in a number of ways including; SCI’s Advisory Service, free monthly technical webinars and freely available technical resources. As this busy year draws to an end we would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our members, clients and readers a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year. Thank you for your support and we look forward to working with you to achieve your objectives in the New Year. |

Joints in steel construction. Moment-resisting joints to Eurocode 3 "The Green Book" (P398) This publication covers the design of moment-resisting joints in accordance with Eurocode 3. Moment-resisting joints are typically found in portal frames and in continuous construction. |
Joints in steel construction. Simple joints to Eurocode 3 - "The Green Book" (P358) This publication is one of a series of “Green Books” that cover a range of steelwork connections. This publication provides guidance for nominally pinned joints (the most common joint type in steel building structures) that primarily carry vertical shear and, as an accidental limit state, tying forces. |
Steel building design: Design data "Eurocode Blue Book" (P363) The "Blue Book" is the essential aid for the design of steelwork. Comprehensive tables of member resistances are given for S275 and S355 steel. |
