SCI CONNECT – October

At our Annual Event on Tuesday 14th November, at the Royal College of Physicians, Mark Wilkinson will present ideas for a new range of Product Certificates.

Mark has recently joined SCI to help expand our current certification and assessment scheme offerings. He is investigating opportunities for a new range of Product Certificates which, while remaining within the general family of SCI Assessed third party endorsements, it is hoped would provide manufacturers with a viable alternative to other well-known third party certification schemes. We will only cover products for which our recognised experience and authority is relevant, and we will maximise the transparency of our Certificates to all readers. We believe transparency is vital in a world of information overload ‐ the scope of any third party endorsement must be absolutely clear up front.

We would be very pleased to hear from any manufacturers of steel products who might be interested in such a scheme, or indeed any specifiers to hear what they look for in third party endorsement.

SCI’s Information Portal

November will see the launch of SCI’s new Information Portal. The Portal, which is fully integrated with our website, comprises:

  • (New) Steelbiz, where members can access all our technical resources on-line. This has a new, much cleaner look than current Steelbiz, and will hopefully enable users to find what they want and need more readily.
  • A new Bookshop.
  • Training and Events calendars, with the ability to book and buy on-line.
  • An interface to enable users to manage ‘My Profile’ quick and easily on-line.

Users of SCI products and services will receive an email inviting them to re-register for access to the new portal. It will be necessary to re-register as the current sites will be retired. This will enable us to update all our contacts and ensure we are fully compliant with soon to change data protection requirements.

Obituary

Raymond Glenn Ogden

Raymond (Ray) Ogden died suddenly on 6th August 2017 in Devon at the age of 55. Ray was Professor in Oxford Brookes University’s (OBU) prestigious Department of Architecture, the Associate Dean of Research and Knowledge Transfer, and held the Tata Steel Europe Chair of the Building Envelope. He had a unique set of skills that encompassed architecture and building technology, building physics and manufacturing, and helped to make his team at OBU internationally renowned.

His first degree was in Architecture and then he went on to study a PhD at the University of Bath in the field of production engineering as applied to construction. Ray’s professional life started with Ove Arup and Arup Associates followed by The Steel Construction Institute (SCI) in part-time role as architect to SCI. Graham Owens, the second director of SCI recalls how Ray arrived for his interview in a neat double breasted jacket, and with a shock of curly red hair, a picture of sartorial elegance. Ray’s first task at SCI was to prepare a series of guides aimed at practitioners on cladding attachments, and interfaces with glazing and other materials. Not only did he prepare the written text but also all of the isometric drawings were done in freehand. In 1990, SCI part-sponsored a new position of Reader which marked the start of Ray’s 27 years at OBU.

In 1993, SCI set up the Light Steel Framing Group with support from Jim Robinson, marketing manager of the then British Steel and Ray played an influential role in preparing publications in this area. In 1995, SCI was partner of a major EU project called ‘Steel in the Urban Habitat’ which culminated in the construction and monitoring of a steel framed house and student residence on the OBU campus which was subject to various building physics and long term durability tests that Ray’s team undertook.

Ray became Professor of Architectural Technology in 2007 and was responsible for setting up a new lab for architectural and commercial testing work at OBU which is widely used by the cladding, timber and light steel framing industries. In 2009, he won the Howard medal from the Institution of Civil Engineers for a co-authored paper on ‘Vacuum Insulation Panels and their Applications in Buildings’.

He co-authored with Mark Lawson and Chris Goodier on a book ‘Design in Modular Construction’ published in 2014, which used many of Ray’s illustrations and a chapter on Production that drew on his expertise in this field. He worked with many companies in the modular industry and prepared a student guide on planning of buildings using modules.

His team also participated in many EU projects covering building physics, over-cladding systems, thermal efficiency and over-heating, and composite actions with various materials which made his team widely recognised for their unique role in the construction sector. In 2016, he was nominated by Offsite Magazine for ‘Construction Professional of the Year’ in acknowledgement of his contribution to the light steel framing and modular industries.

Ray was born on 21st May 1962 in Birmingham but spent most of his early life in Brixham in Devon. He leaves a wife Sara and children Laura (15) and Luke (13). His funeral at St Helens church in Benson, Oxfordshire on 31st August was attended by many friends from OBU, the church and locality. Donations may be made to ‘Children in Need’.

‘An hour with Ray was always well spent and useful and he would invariably come to the right solution with a few sketches and careful thought. He was held in great regard by all who knew him and he will be deeply missed’.

SteelBricks™ ‐ The new generation of Steel Modular Construction.

SCI has been working with SCI Member Caunton Engineering in a project funded by Innovate UK to design and construct a new generation of SC modular construction (‘Steel Bricks’) that overcomes the manufacturing problems of earlier SC systems. Steel Bricks provide greater use of pre-fabrication and factory assembly and reduce reliance on site activity.

A project dissemination day will be held on the 9th November at Caunton Engineering, Nottingham. Delegates will hear about the project and see a constructed example.

Government's New Apprenticeship Levy Scheme to benefit Caunton Engineering

It is nearly ten years now since Caunton Engineering gained approval, from the awarding body EAL, for its Academy to become an accredited training centre. Since then, our ultra-modern Academy facilities have provided a model production line, aided to simulate and map the processes of an actual working production line and industrial environment, and thereby help to train apprentices. Not only for our own apprentices but many visiting novices, including consulting engineers and architects.
