SCI CONNECT – NOVEMBER

SCI 2015 highlights

To some extent 2015 has been a year of contrasts. The plight of UK steel producers has been very big and sad news, yet for SCI (and indeed much of the UK steel construction sector) things are booming. Approaching our 30th birthday in the early summer, our official yearend figures for 2014/15 showed SCI to be in very good health and well placed to serve the sector for years to come. During 2015 we have seen a growth in turnover and been fortunate to recruit a number of top class engineers.

SCI has long been known for its benchmark publications, and although fewer in quantity these days the quality/relevance in 2015 has been of the highest order. We were pleased to collaborate with ECCS to produce a UK focused edition of their guide to EN1993-1-1. Our most recent publications on portal frame design to Eurocode 3, and design rules for composite beams to Eurocode 4, should facilitate significant commercial advantage for users. The quality of the SCI expertise that lies behind such publications is evidenced by the formal involvement several members of staff have in Eurocode developments.

Our webinar series continues to be highly valued by SCI Members, and this year has seen record audiences signing up. The number of designers we have helped through our advisory desk is also the highest it has been for some time. We were also very pleased to work with ArcelorMittal in the production of a jointly badged event at the ArcelorMittal Orbit in the summer, and to be able to attract a record audience to our own Annual Event in November.

So as 2015 draws to a close we will take this opportunity to wish all our members and clients a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year. We thank you for your support this year, and look forward to working with you again, and helping you solve your problems and achieve your objectives, in 2016.

Structural robustness of steel framed buildings (P391) Avoidance of thermal bridging in steel construction (P380) Fire resistance design of steel framed buildings (P375))

Steel building design: Design data "Eurocode Blue Book" (P363) The "Blue Book" is the essential aid for the design of steelwork. Comprehensive tables of member resistances are given for S275 and S355 steel. Republished June 2013; reprinted 2015. Please see details for more information.

Joints in steel construction. Simple joints to Eurocode 3 (P358) "The Green Book Series" This publication covers a range of steelwork connections, and provides guidance for nominally pinned joints (the most common joint type in steel building structures) that primarily carry vertical shear and accidental limit state and tying forces.

Joints in steel construction. Moment-resisting joints to Eurocode 3 (P398) "The Green Book Series" This publication covers the design of moment-resisting joints in accordance with Eurocode 3. Moment-resisting joints are typically found in portal frames and in continuous construction.

Caunton Portals for the Port of Tilbury

Caunton are designing and supplying the steelwork for a major new Ambient Warehouse at berth 45 of the Port of Tilbury, for main contractor Winvic Construction. The port is located on the River Thames , and is the principal port for London. It is the main United Kingdom port for handling the importation of paper. There are extensive facilities for containers, grain, and other bulk cargoes. There are also facilities for the importation of cars. It forms part of the wider Port of London.

The steelwork comprises massive 90 metres span portal frames – propped in two positions. The building is over 230 metres long with a high level walkway from end to end accessed by 2 external stairs . The total steelwork delivered is over 1000te . In addition, there are two smaller adjacent portal framed buildings, the drivers’ pod office and the plant room. Caunton knows the area well. The company had only two years ago designed and supplied the framing steelwork for two buildings, the Border Control Post and the Border Force Examination Building for DP World at their fledging London Gateway development nearby on the Essex coast. Further information on this can be found on Caunton Web Site News of 17th July 2013.

Caunton Portals

As the building was so close to dock side the dock cranes actually over sailed part of the new build so we had additional restrictions to work with . All these were overcome with a cheery smile.

EOS Facades scoop Best Use of Steel Award!

At the forefront of the light steel frame sector – EOS Facades was announced the winner of the ‘Best Use of Steel’ category at the inaugural Offsite Construction Awards held on Tuesday 01 December at the Inmarsat Centre, London.

EOS Facades took on Bryden Wood, Fusion Build, HTA Design and John Roberts Architects to scoop the award for their contribution to ‘The Barn’ at the University of Nottingham.

Steve Thompson, Managing Director of EOS Facades said of the award win: "It’s fantastic to win the best use of steel category – especially taking into consideration the calibre of the competition. These awards provide a fantastic platform to showcase the benefits of offsite construction!”

EOS Winners

EOS Facades were appointed as the steel framing systems (SFS) supplier for The Barn – a project created in response to the University of Nottingham’s masterplan for the 100-acre Sutton Bonington campus – to establish a new amenities building which would unite the previously separate student and staff facilities, making them accessible under one roof.
