SCI CONNECT – MAY

Work to develop the Eurocodes is now seriously underway, with the Phase 1 Project Teams having delivered first drafts of their work at the end of April. The drafts are due to be accepted by the members of the various sub-committees by the end of June so that work can progress. Hopefully the feedback from the subcommittees will ensure that progress is in an acceptable direction, remembering that the main thrust of this work is to improve the ease of use of the codes (one aspect of the formal definition of easing use being avoiding fundamental change). The timing of the start of Phase 2 is still not clear, but it is likely that new teams will be formed for this new set of Tasks in late 2016. There remain plans for Phases 3 and 4.

At SCI, alongside our colleagues at BCSA and others in the UK steel sector, we are keeping a close eye on progress as we fully support the planned direction. It is not easy, as there is a serious lack of practitioner involvement in code development and the process described above is quite closed (would anything ever get done if it was not?). Practical input is needed to rein back the enthusiasm of researchers, who use different criteria to judge whether a code is ‘successful’.

Timescales are long. Opportunities to make a real difference
are not guaranteed, and we are a long way from starting with a clean sheet of paper. So we must be realistic. But recognising those limitations we are always pleased to hear from practitioners who would be willing to join in and do what
they can.

Stainless steel takes the strain

Stainless steel is a highly versatile material, possessing a unique selection of useful properties which can be exploited in load-bearing applications. The main property distinguishing stainless steel from carbon steel is its inherent corrosion resistance, due to the tightly adherent protective layer of Chromuim oxide which spontaneously forms on its surface in the present of oxygen.

Hazards 26 Conference, 24-26 May 2016, Edinburgh, UK

Bassam Burgan will be presenting a technical paper at Hazards 26, one of Europe’s leading process safety events, organised by the Institution of Chemical Engineers. He will discuss how simple objects such as instrument boxes and oil drums, found on petro-chemical plant sites, serve as reliable indicators of the explosion overpressure at their positions in the event of a vapour cloud explosion.

International Conference on Ocean, Marine & Arctic Engineering, 20-24 June 2016, Busan, South Korea

Bassam Burgan will be presenting a technical paper at the International Conference on Ocean, Marine & Arctic Engineering, organised by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The paper demonstrates how the use of coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian analysis of structures subjected to explosion loads can be used to minimise the weight of such structures by allowing for the interaction between the explosion load and the response of the structure. This is particularly important on weight sensitive structures such as floating oil and gas production facilities.

 

 

Latest Certification

U-Roof Ltd

U-Roof have achieved SCI/NHBC Certification for their light steel framing system for walls, floors and roofs. The certification confirms that the U-Roof design process and standard construction details for their systems are in accordance with NHBC Standards Chapter 6.10 for Light Steel Walls and Floors. Roofs are not included in NHBC Standards Chapter 6.10, however, the U-Roof panelised system for roofs has been assessed by SCI. Further details are provided on the SCI Assessed website.

Resistance of beams & Columns in Fire (P403) This publication provides guidance on the resistance of beams and columns in fire. This publication presents two numerical worked examples demonstrating the calculation of the critical temperature and resistance at elevated temperature.
