Following a four month market research programme on product certification in the cold rolled steel sector SCI is pleased to announce that we are to develop our own offering of comprehensive product certification to this sector.
The research was carried out by Mark Wilkinson, a consultant employed by SCI who has almost 30 years' experience in the construction industry, the last 15 of which have been spent working for BM TRADA, BBA and BRE.
As part of this piece of work Mark visited and talked with manufacturers, warranty providers and trade associations to gain an understanding of the current certification available. His discussions had a particular focus on the service levels and support received from the certification bodies, as well as the value of carrying such certification.
As a result of the high levels of interest and very positive research results we are pleased to announce that from the 1st March SCI are to begin the detailed development of a certification scheme, for which we will seek UKAS accreditation. The initial focus will be on the following product sectors:
- Cladding/roofing/decking/flooring
- Non load bearing infill panels
- Light Steel Frame
- Modular units
Although a launch date for availability is yet to be set, should you be interested in this service either as a manufacturer or specifier then please contact Mark with your requirements and/or questions.

| SCI commissioned to prepare Sinbeams Software
|
|
SCI have been commissioned by Kiernan Structural Steel Ltd to prepare design software for Sinbeams - plate girders with a web having a sinusoidal profile. The webs are relatively thin, so the members are lightweight. The sinusoidal profile increases the resistance to shear, which may otherwise be the critical resistance check. The design of the beams is straightforward and covered by design rules in Annex in BS EN 1993-1-5. The software will allow the user to input a range of loading arrangements, restraints and beam geometry (including tapered sections). Component dimensions selected by the designer may be verified or optimised for a least weight solution.

Structural Stainless Steel Design Tables (P420) For North American Market
|
|
This new publication is now available, as a free download, the guide removes barriers to specification making it easier and faster for engineers to design with Structural Stainless Steel. The publication is sponsored by Team Stainless and published by the Steel Construction Institute (SCI)
The publication presents design tables covering the most common structural sections available in North America. It complements the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) design guide DG27: Structural Stainless Steel. Published in 2013 by providing section properties and member capacities in accordance with DG27. The new tables enable Designers to quickly select the appropriate structural members, and are presented in the familiar format used for carbon steel, in the AISC Steel Construction Manual.

| Kenyan Webinars
|
|
SCI are working jointly with SCI member company Doshi Group to provide a series of five webinars designed to support the use of steel in Kenya and neighbouring countries. Each live webinar is an hour long, delivered to suit Kenyan time, and provides guidance on steel design using BS 5950. The webinars cover a variety of technical subjects covering the main aspects of braced frame design. The main structural material in Kenya is concrete, so the first webinar on 7 February, which was joined by over 100 delegates, considered the advantages of a steel design and how clients might be encouraged to consider a steel solution. The advantages of lightweight, long spans, fewer, smaller columns, speed of construction and savings in foundations are relevant in all markets.
