SCI CONNECT – September 2019

In these times of fast paced projects where lead times to deadlines become shorter and budgets tighter mistakes can easily be made along the design process. To help meet time restrictions and avoid mistakes being made SCI offers support to the steel industry in a number of ways, in particular by offering a number of Membership packages to suit both individuals and companies. SCI membership provides direct access to experts, supported by technical resources and best practice guidance, to save you time and money.

Our membership support varies depending on what you need at the time. Direct access to our advisory team, consistently ranked by members as the most valuable benefit, offers fast, independent, authoritative advice. Each enquiry is dealt with confidentially. The Advisory team's extensive knowledge covers all aspects of steel design and construction, including interpretation of code requirements.

SCI's technical resources are available to Sole Trader and Corporate members to view and download, via Steelbiz on the SCI Information Portal. This site contains information such as; SCI advisory desk notes, technical articles, NCCI and electronic versions of SCI publications.

The Information Portal also contains the SCI Bookshop where hard copies of SCI publications are available for purchase. Our training/events calendar shows all public courses, which are available at a discounted rate for members.

Our free technical webinars are very popular and run monthly during a lunchtime period. The webinars provide latest design guidance and keep attendees up-to-date with best practice.

SCI Advisory Questions and Answers

For SCI Sole Trader and Corporate members, SCI offers support through our Advisory Desk Service. For questions asked which we feel are pertinent to the wider member audience we publish anonymously the questions and answers.

This month our published question is about; Expression 19 in publication P355: Design of composite beams with large web openings.

Question: In publication P355 - Design of composite beams with large web openings, expression 19 gives a formula for the plastic bending resistance of a Tee section above or below an opening, in the absence of axial force. The second term is given as:

Nancy Baddoo attended a meeting of the AISC committee

Should the symbol hf be tf, the flange thickness?

Please see the answer to all Advisory questions on the SCI Information Portal.

Castillia Building

Lindapter Hollo-Bolts provided a solution for securing an architectural glass prism façade in Milan.

Project Background
The Isola district of Milan has recently undergone a major transformation, making it one of the most attractive areas of the city. Due to the prime location of De Castillia 23 and its excellent transport links, Gruppo Unipol decided to renovate the building and occupy it as their headquarters.

Client Requirement
Unipol wanted to create an innovative and contemporary building in keeping with the area. The large-scale restoration work aimed to completely change the building's aesthetic features, but also to improve its functionality, energy performance and the overall efficiency of the building's management.

The architects, Progetto CMR, proposed an unusual glass prism façade design, aimed at reflecting sunlight in a constantly different way. This required a method of connecting the glass support brackets to the hollow tubular sections forming the façade.
