SCI CONNECT – July

At SCI we recognise that it is difficult for practitioners to participate in code development, because of the time needed, lack of funding, and uncertain outcomes. This is particularly the case with European codes - as an aside we are pleased to note that BSI has stated its intent to remain a part of CEN despite whatever changes lie ahead for Britain in Europe. The flip side of this is that we also recognise that those involved in code development, from individuals through national organisations like BSI to CEN, do try and encourage practitioners onto relevant committees but struggle to make much progress. Being placed somewhere between academia and practice at SCI, we try and bring that experience to code development as best we can.

A small but illustrative example of our Eurocode related work is that we have recently completed some studies, funded by BCSA, that fill a gap left by EN1994-1-1. The problem concerns anchorage of parallel decking when it is split along the line of a beam. In order to avoid specific reinforcement, which is a very conservative and rather impractical solution in most cases, the code tells users the decking must be ‘appropriately anchored’. It gives no definition or quantification of ‘appropriate’ but refers users to their National Annex. Unfortunately the UK National Annex, and indeed all others NAs, give no further information. Our recent studies, based on finite element modelling, showed that provided the detailing meets certain, not unreasonable, requirements then nominal fixity may be deemed ‘appropriate’. No changes to existing deck fixing practice are therefore required, and no additional reinforcement. Full details of the outcomes of this work will appear shortly in an AD note in New Steel Construction.

PUREST

SCI is co-ordinating a new European dissemination project called PUREST: Promotion of new Eurocode rules for structural stainless steels. Working with partners in Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Poland, the Fourth Edition of SCI’s publication Design Manual for Structural Stainless Steel will be prepared and translated into 9 languages. Design software to EN 1993-1-4 will be developed and seminars will be held across Europe, in association with stainless steel producers and development associations. The project runs for 18 months until December 2017 and is part funded by the EU’s Research Fund for Coal and Steel. More information is available from Nancy Baddoo.

We are very pleased to have Dr Ana Girao Coelho joining us at the beginning of August. Ana has degrees from the University of Coimbra in Portugal, and has worked at the Universities of Delft, Warwick and most recently Newcastle. Her main area of interest is the behaviour of joints, indeed she is a member of the Project Team delivering the next version of EN1993-1-8 and will bring that work to SCI. She also has recent experience in the use of high strength steels and FRP.

Touch Rugby - Gold

Jose Luis Dias, SCI’s web designer, has been playing Touch rugby for nearly 8 years and has represented England on three previous occasions. One of the fastest growing sports in the world, Touch rugby was derived from Rugby League in the early 70s and now attracts over 50 nations to compete in international tournaments.

The 11th Touch rugby European Championships were recently hosted in Jersey, where England was represented by a strong contingent of nearly 190 players and staff. We would like to congratulate Jose and the team on becoming gold medallists and retaining England’s status as European Champions for a third consecutive time.

ArcelorMittal and SCI join forces to present an event at the ArcelorMittal Orbit

Supporting economic and innovative steel design in the UK. Tuesday 27th September 2016, ArcelorMittal Orbit.

Through a series of presentations at the ArcelorMittal Orbit, Europe’s largest sculpture and award winning events venue, you will learn why S460 was chosen for one of London’s newest iconic buildings, and how to specify, design and fabricate using S460 steel. You will also hear about some of the latest products from ArcelorMittal such as Angelina beams, shallow floor solutions and Arcorox sections.

Additionally this event will introduce the ArcelorMittal Orange Book which includes resistances tables for S460 sections making it an essential reference and design aid for engineers and fabricators.
